Since the prehistoric era Gotthard Pass has separated northern Europe from the Mediterranean, both politically and economically. For these strategic reasons, as well as for its vast natural grandeur, the bridge at Gotthard Pass has attained a mythic stature and attracted a continuous stream of artists, writers, and other awe-struck visitors over the centuries

Devil's Bridges
The Devil is credited with building only two or three dozen bridges in the world.
Pilgrims, merchants, armies, and the progress of nations were often halted at the place where a Devil's Bridge ultimately was built. For centuries these bridges defined borders in a way unimaginable to us. The Russian Imperial army was destroyed at Gotthard in 1799. One of Jeanne d’Arc's most critical victories, the battle at Beaugency, added to the momentum of the subsequent French offenses on Rheims and Paris.
The legend that has given these bridges their name . . . (More . . . . )
